Dexter Gray Newsome, age 67 of Tobaccoville, reached the pearly gates of Heaven on his Harley just before dawn on March 24, 2024.
We are sure the first one he ran to would be his grandpa, Gray Schaub Moore, who was Dexter’s idol.
He was preceded in death by both maternal and paternal grandparents, both parents, Louis and the late Nancy Newsome, his former wife whom was a lifelong friend and the mother to his only child, Brenda E. Newsome.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Carly Anne Maurer, husband Michael, grandchildren, Hunter, Paislee, Madison and JonMichael Maurer, a sister, Joyce Shaw (James) and many nieces.
Dexter was a fighter till his very last breath. He lived his life to the fullest and had many accomplishments throughout his time, including traveling the country driving buses and setting up stages for performers such as Alabama, Charlie Daniels, and Loretta Lynn. He graduated with an Associates in Science, Associates in Liberal Arts along with a Bachelors’ in Biology. He retired from Siemens Energy. Dexter enjoyed cooking but his pride and joy was riding his Harley, disheartenedly that would end by the unexpected diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday March 28, 2024 at Slate Funeral Home with visitation prior from 12:00 - 1:45pm.
Carly wishes to express her sincere gratitude to the staff at the Hospice Haven House and Rockingham County Hospice for their dedication and compassionate care in his final journey on this side of Heaven, and to the loved ones who were a constant in his life through this difficult disease.
