Edith Virginia Jones was born in a cabin at the base of Pilot Mountain on January 22, 1927, to Wesley E. and Callie S. Jones. A few years later, her parents purchased a farm where Edith and siblings George, Joseph, Pearl, and James worked, played, and attended Mount Zion Methodist Church. Edith graduated as valedictorian of her class at Pinnacle High School. She attended one year at High Point College before marrying Wendell V. Keiger in 1947. She and Wendell lived on the Keiger Family dairy farm near King and had three children: Patricia Keiger, Weldon (Cindy) Keiger, and Elizabeth (Steve) Carroll.
Edith first substituted and then worked 26 years as a teacher assistant at King Primary School. She devoted much time to Trinity United Methodist Church as a Sunday school teacher and especially enjoyed working with the UMW by making rolls, persimmon pudding, and fried apple pies for the church bazaars. She also enjoyed hand quilting, reading, and being a good friend and neighbor.
After her husband became ill and later died in 2006, Edith assisted Weldon with the milking chores and fed hundreds of bottles of milk to baby calves twice a day over several years. When she wasn’t working in the garden and cooking or preserving food, she enjoyed working with her flowers, feeding the birds, and even using her riding lawnmower up through this past fall at age 96.
Surviving Edith are her children and their spouses and grandchildren Kathryn Weidl, Jennifer (Scott) Keiger-Dowd, Melinda Queliz, Maria (Steven) Simpson, Wesley (Ashley) Carroll; step-grandchildren Anna Schmidt and Katie Russell; 10 great-grandchildren, 1 step great grandchild, 1 great great grandchild and several beloved nieces and nephews.
