Barbara Chunn Obituary

Barbara Jane Newton Chunn, 82, of King, NC, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 12, 2024 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC.  She was surrounded by her loving family and several long time loving friends, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Jane was born March 5, 1942 in Winston Salem, NC to her parents Thomas D. Newton and Elizabeth Sapp Newton.  She graduated from Hanes High School in June of 1960.  She married Calvin M. Chunn, her husband of 64 years on the day she graduated high school on June 3, 1960.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all who knew her.  She retired from First Citizen’s Bank after 25 years of service.  After retirement, she volunteered to sing for Jesus in the community where they sang to comfort people in rest homes.  She was known for her kindness, generosity, and servitude to others.

She is survived by her husband, Calvin Michael Chunn, her daughter and son in-law, Lisa C. Pegram and Hal Pegram; her son and daughter in-law, Michael Todd Chunn and Donna F. Chunn; 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth P. Myers, and husband Joe Myers, Kayla Pegram, Christopher M. Chunn (Hannah Callahan), Dustin R. Chunn, Joshua T. Chunn (Lacy Beck). Two siblings, Anne Newton Slater and husband Mike Slater, Tom Kent Newton and wife Karen Newton and a host of loving nieces, nephews and extended family.  She was preceded in death by  her parents, Tom and Lib Newton and her brother Tom Kent Newton.

A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 11am on Tuesday September 17, 2024 in the Slate Funeral Home Chapel.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home from 10am-11am.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston Salem, NC.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, the Novant Health Cancer Institute Forsyth and Dr. Jordan McBroom of Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center for their compassionate and loving care during Jane’s illness.  She will be deeply missed, but forever in our hearts.

John 11:25-26

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:  And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
