Carole S. Vernon, 82, of Winston Salem, NC passed away Saturday April 30, 2022, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House.
Ms. Vernon was born on September 18, 1939, in Forsyth County to the late Jessie Leonard and Ruby Octavia Smith Shields. She was a member of Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church and a graduate of Forsyth Technical College with an associate degree in Office Technology. Carole began working at Mclean Trucking prior to her graduation from High School and retired from there after 29 years of faithful service; she was employed there from March 17, 1957, until July 31, 1986. Following her retirement from McLean Trucking, she worked as a Human Resource Technician at Forsyth Technical College for another 33 years.
Carole had a passion for dancing and was a competitive ballroom dancer winning many first-place trophies and teaching others the art of Ballroom Dance. She was also a passionate reader. She loved word searches and the Pioneer Woman.
Carole was preceded in death by her sisters Arlene Shields Campbell and Kay Shields Martin. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Ms. Vernon will lie in state on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, from 9:00 AM until 7:00 PM, at Slate Funeral Home in King, NC.
The family will receive friends and loved ones from 2:00 PM -3:00 PM on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, in the Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church.
A graveside funeral service will begin at 3:00 PM following the visitation in the Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery officiated by Dr. Evelyn Lemons.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church: 1024 Volunteer Rd. King, NC 27021 or to Kate B. Reynold Hospice Home: 101 Hospice Dr. Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
