Mrs. Carolyn Carroll Redding, 84, a life-long resident of the Quaker Gap Community of King, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 30, 2024. She had been in declining health for two weeks. Carolyn was born in Stokes County on September 26, 1940, to Hardy & Beulah Carroll, who preceded her in death.
Also preceding her in death was the love of her life, John Nolan Redding, and their two infant sons. Carolyn and Nolan were married for almost 52 years before his passing in 2010.
Left behind to cherish her memory is her brother, Leroy Carroll. She is also survived by cousins, nephews, and great-nephews.
Carolyn graduated from Walnut Cove School in 1958. She was a devoted wife and servant of the Lord who loved her family, Jesus, her church family, church, neighbors, and the Quaker Gap community. She had been attending Quaker Gap Baptist Church since she was seven months old and had been a member there 73 years. She had served on many committees, including the cemetery, hostess, VBS, cookbook, and others. In her later years, she was a faithful servant of the administrative office where she helped fold and stuff the bulletins every week and helped fold and seal the monthly newsletters prepping them to mail. Carolyn worked on the farm her whole life; that made her the tough lady that was. She was very talented and could do almost anything. She loved crafts, crocheting, and knitting, and she has made hats for people all over the United States. She and Nolan also loved gardening and traveling. They traveled all over the United States, Canada, and enjoyed farm tours, in Australia, New Zealand, and other countries in Europe.
“We saw you getting tired, and a cure was not meant to be, so He put His arms around you, and whispered, ‘Come unto me.’ With tearful eyes we watched, and saw you fall away. Although we could not bear to lose you, we couldn’t ask you to stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands laid to rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.”
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 3rd, at Slate Funeral Home in King. Her funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 4th, at Quaker Gap Baptist Church where her body will lie in state from 1:30-2:00 p.m. Rev. Jack Darida will officiate the service. A graveside service will follow in the Quaker Gap Baptist Church Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband and infant sons.
The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to members of Quaker Gap Baptist Church, neighbors and friends in the community, loved ones and family who have offered their prayers, love, and support for Carolyn this past month. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Quaker Gap Baptist Church Cemetery Fund (2265 Flat Shoals Rd. King, NC 27021).
Slate Funeral Home of King will be assisting the family.
