David L. Grant

Mr. David Grant, 75, of Mt. Airy, formerly of King, NC, and Oneonta, NY, passed away Friday, November 29, 2024, after a lengthy period of declining health. He was born on January 23, 1949, in Norwich, NY, to Raymond and Barbara Grant.

He graduated from Sherburne High School, Sherburne, NY in 1967. Dave attended Broom Tech Community College, earning an Associate in Accounting, and SUNY Oneonta, earning a Bachelor of Business Economics. He married Dagny Spohn on October 27, 1972. They were married for 25 years until her passing in 1997. David was best known for working at Volkswagen of Oneonta, where he was the office manager and General manager for almost 16 years. After his career at Volkswagen, he became a teaching assistant at Laurens Central School for a number of years. He continued this after his move to North Carolina in 2005 working as a substitute for Stokes County Schools. He was an avid follower of Oneonta Yellowjacket football, where he frequently was part of the chain crew for games. He was a member of the Oneonta Elks Lodge, 1312. He was also an avid bowler at Holiday Lanes and a member of the Wednesday night golf league at what was then CeeJay Golf Course. He coached Basketball at the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club, Jaycee Soccer program, and Lions Club softball for many years.

David was predeceased by his parents and wife, Dagny.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Raymond and Heather Grant of Mt. Airy, NC, and Jennifer and Edward Von Iderstein of Indian Trail, NC. His granddaughters Callie Grant, Laura Von Iderstein, Catherine Von Iderstein and Isabella Grant. He is also survived by his sisters, Patricia Farrell (Mark) of Palm Harbor, FL, and Terry Pratt (Thom) of Guilford, their children. He is also survived by many Ferguson cousins and their families.

The family will receive family and friends for a memorial service December 15, 2024, starting at 1:30, with the service starting at 2:00 PM at Second Chance Church, 449 Bear Creek Church Road, Dobson, NC 27017. Pastor Terry Coe will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mr. Grant’s name to the South Stokes High School Athletic Boosters or the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club.
