Retired U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Donald Gray Adams, known affectionately as Don, passed away on April 9, 2025, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Born on December 19, 1942, in Forsyth County, NC, Don's journey through life was marked by service, adventure, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community.
The son of the late John Franklin Adams and Mallie Mae McGrady Adams, Don grew up understanding the value of hard work and dedication. Though he would come to outlive his beloved wife Sandra Fay Adams, his son Douglas Adams, his daughter Donna Beck, his grandson Christopher Adams, his son-in-law Rodney Collins, his right-hand man and Terry Beck, as well as his 10 older siblings. Don's legacy is carried on by a loving family. He is survived by his son Danny Adams (Tammy), his daughter Dorena Collins, his grandchildren Christina Burchette (Anthony), Nickie Denton (Kenny), Samantha Spell (Jason), Jesse Collins (Amber), Heather Collins, great-grandchildren Malachi Burchette, Carleigh Denton, Kingsley Collins, step-granddaughters Lindsey Payne, Brianna Spell, along with his special friend Barbara Keppers, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family from Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Florida.
Don's professional life was as distinguished as his personal life was cherished. After a storied career in the U.S. Army, where he served as a Brigade Command Sgt. Major, Don took great pride in training advanced infantry and was deeply invested in the welfare of his soldiers. His military career was succeeded by a 31-year tenure with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Don's dedication to service extended into his community involvement as well; he served as Chief of the Old Richmond Fire Department for six years and held several key positions with the American Legion Post 290, including membership in the Honor Guard. A devout member of Sharon Regular Baptist Church in East Bend, NC, Don's faith was a cornerstone of his life. He was also a proud member of Rolling Thunder, chapter RTNC6.
Don's interests and hobbies painted the picture of a man who loved life and lived it to the fullest. An avid motorcycle enthusiast since 1970, he traveled extensively, visiting 49 states and hiking 26 miles rim to rim across the Grand Canyon. His commitment to community was evident in his volunteer work with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Department and Mountain Valley Hospice. As manager of the Stokes County Fair for nearly 30 years, Don was a familiar and welcoming presence, known for his famous Chicken Stew—a recipe he delighted in keeping secret.
Those who knew Don would describe him as adventurous, friendly, and selfless. He found joy in being of service to others and made an indelible impact on all who were fortunate enough to cross his path. His adventurous spirit was matched by his genuine love for people and the community that he so diligently served.
