Donald Gray Mathis, a cherished family man, avid sports fan, and skilled craftsman, went home to be with the Lord on September 9, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on March 15, 1939, Donald's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his loved ones, his passion for his hobbies, and his love for football.
Donald is survived by his daughters, Robin Conner, Vicki Nicholson and her husband Jimmy, Tracie Montgomery and her husband Mickey, and his son Michael Mathis and his wife Amy. He was a proud brother to Leonard "Lennie" Mathis. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Victoria White, Joey Watson, Tina Watson, Shaylee Montgomery, and eight great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his spirit and love. Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Mathis, his mother Dorothy Wells and step-father Robert Wells, his sister Pat Stewart, and his granddaughter Jodi Montgomery.
Throughout his life, Donald found joy in the simple pleasures. He loved reading his Bible every night and was an exceptional bowler, often found at the local lanes, where his competitive spirit made him a well-known figure. His talent for woodworking was evident in the beautiful pieces he created, each a testament to his patience and attention to detail. Donald's love for Wake Forest and Washington Redskins football was more than a pastime; it was a passion that ignited lively discussions and brought his family together on countless occasions.
The family will receive friends on Thursday September 11, 2025 from 5pm-7pm at Slate Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11am on Friday September 12, 2025 in the Slate Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Garden in Mt. Airy.
