Donald Ray Overby, 86 of King, NC passed away Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Woltz Hospice Home.

Donald was born on May 19, 1937, in Surry County, NC, to the late Clyde Taft and Mary (Willard) Overby. He retired from the US Air Force. He was a member of the VFW, and the American Legion Post 290.

He was gifted with the ability to repair almost anything and was a talented artist. Donald enjoyed photography and woodworking. He took great joy in teaching his sons how to do things, like drawing or counting money, but mostly how to be a good man.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a good person who gave to everyone he could and would help people with anything he could, whether he knew them or not. He was a loving and compassionate person.

Donald also loved water and the beach, he enjoyed deep sea fishing at Hampton Beach and loved visiting Pilot Mountain.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Jimmy, Gerald, and Larry Wayne Overby.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife, Josephine Overby, his children: Donnie Ray Overby, Jr., Lisa Capella, Mary Beth Ruder, Kimberly Maurer, Brian Overby, and Steven Overby, his sister, Kaye Smith, his stepchildren: Jerry Hoffman and wife Jan, Wayne Hoffman and wife Cynthia, Paul D. Hoffman and wife Margot, Bernadette Melvin and husband Marty, Claire Hudon and husband Larry; along with several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other relatives, and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at Slate Funeral Home with Pastor Kevin Broyhill officiating.
