Edgar Lane Bennett

King, NC – Edgar Lane Bennett, 90, of King, NC passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at Woltz Hospice Home with his beloved family by his side.

Mr. Bennett was born on November 12, 1932, in Stokes County, NC to the late Ralph Edgar and Beulah Sizemore Bennett. He retired from RJ Reynolds and farming. He proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War. For ten years he served as Post Commander for the American Legion Post 290 in King. He was also a member of Haw Pond Church of Christ. He married the love of his life, Iris on May 26, 1956, and raised a beautiful family together. Lane loved his “Carolina Tar Heels.”

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Zachary Ryan Gordon.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of sixty-six years, Iris Southern Bennett, his daughters: Sharon Bennett Gordon (Mike), Deborah Bennett (James Wiseman), and Tessie Bennett; two sisters: Bonnell Proctor (Larry), Kay Hunneycutt (Arthur); a brother, Tony Bennett (Wanda), a grandson, Matthew Gordon (Anna), three granddaughters: Brittany Chaney (Brian), Crystal Thorne, and Emily Wiseman, eight great-grandchildren: Madelyn, Alivia, and Caroline Gordon, Troy and Jase Chaney, Ciara Wiseman, Amir Scipio, and T.J. Thorne; along with special friends, Coley and Barbara Hunsucker.

The family wishes to extend a special Thank you to Mr. Bennett’s caregiver, Erica Hatcher, and Woltz Hospice Home for their care and concern for Mr. Bennett.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at Slate Funeral Home, and at other times, at the home of his daughter, Sharon Gordon.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, on Friday, April 14, 2023, at Haw Pond Church of Christ with Minister Jerry Tedder officiating. Interment will immediately follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors provided by the American Legion Post 290.
