Emma Hincher Obituary

Emma Starbuck Hincher, 92, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2025, at Summerstone Health and Rehabilitation Center under Liberty hospice care in Kernersville, NC.

Born on January 2, 1933, in Forsyth County, NC, Emma was the beloved daughter of the late Stephen Dillard Starbuck and Ada Hockaday Starbuck. She was preceded in death by her siblings Paul, James, and Bobby Starbuck, and her sister Lucille Goings—all of whom she held close to her heart.

Affectionately known as “Nanny” to those who loved her most, Emma will be deeply missed by her devoted daughter, Rebecca Attaway, and her husband, John; her sister, Nancy Starbuck; her grandchildren, Michelle Edsel (Steve), Allison Shelton (Jody), Kristal Ratchford (Mike), and David Attaway (Misty); her ten great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren, who brought her immeasurable joy.

Emma built a meaningful and hardworking professional life, first as a talented hairdresser—bringing care, confidence, and connection to those who sat in her chair—and later as a dedicated inspector at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, where she was known for her precision and strong work ethic.

She was a member of Marshall Baptist Church and often spoke fondly of her time there. Emma found joy and serenity in her garden, where she nurtured both plants and peace. She was also a gifted seamstress, whose hands created beautiful projects that remain treasured mementos for her loved ones.

Emma's warmth, kindness, and steady presence will be profoundly missed by her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 27, at Marshall Baptist Church, 5739 Old Rural Hall Road, Winston-Salem, NC.
Flowers may be sent to Slate Funeral Home, 132 E Dalton Rd, King, NC 27021.
