Glenda Barber Obituary

Glenda Gail McHone Barber, a beacon of kindness and love, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2025, at the age of 80, in the comforting surroundings of Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center. Known affectionately as Glenda to her friends and family, she was a woman whose presence was a source of joy and whose memory will be cherished forever.

Born on September 26, 1945, in the serene landscapes of Surry County, NC, Glenda was the daughter of the late Warren and Virginia Pack McHone. Her life was a testament to hard work and dedication, as evidenced by her impressive 55-year tenure at Hanes, where she retired. Glenda's commitment to her career was paralleled only by her devotion to her family, whom she loved with an unwavering passion.

Glenda's journey through life was shared with her beloved husband of 63 years, Grady Barber, who preceded her in death, as did their son, Michael Gray Barber. Her love for her family was a constant, and she embraced her role as a Mom and Maw Maw with open arms and an open heart. The simple pleasures of life, like the beauty of roses and the delicate flutter of butterflies, brought her immense joy.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness in her children: Sherrie Shaw (David), Ricky Dean Barber (Sharon), and Amanda Cagle, as well as her son-in-law, Jason Cagle. Glenda's spirit will live on through her grandchildren: Michelle Wilson, Matthew Barber, Tara Cunninham, Rickey Barber Jr., Jessica Barber, Brandon Cagle, and Brianna Cagle; and her siblings: Donnie McHone (Marilyn), Gary McHone (Carol), Donita Denny (Tommy), and Mary DeHart (Don); She leaves behind her seven wonderful great-grandchildren and one adorable great-great-grandchild. Each of them will cherish and carry on her heartfelt teachings of compassion and the value of family, inspiring generations to come.

The family will open their arms to friends and loved ones on Monday, October 6, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Slate Funeral Home to share memories and celebrate Glenda's life. The funeral service will commence at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Paul Norman offering words of comfort and hope. Following the service, Glenda will be laid to rest at Mount Pleasant Methodist Church Cemetery.

Special thanks are extended to Isaiah, Kelsey, and Travis from Amedisys Home Health for their exceptional care and compassion during Glenda's final days. Their support was a source of comfort to both Glenda and her family.
