King - Grady Carl Southern, 90, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away at his home on Mondy, June 3, 2024.
Carl was born in Stokes County to the late Grady Lucas Southern and Ola Mae Fulk Southern. He graduated from King High School, where he met the love of his life while washing dishes in the school cafeteria, Betty Sue Gibson. He retired from Hennis Freight (Spector) and then from Forsyth County Schools transportation. Carl served on the King City Council, served as mayor pro tem, served on the King Planning Board and King Outreach Ministry Board, and was a charter member of the King Fire Department. Carl never met a stranger. He was a loving, caring person who loved to share his knowledge and skills, touching many lives and making friends while owning Southern Garage. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of King and attended all his life until he became homebound. He served as a Deacon and in many other positions, especially in music programs. He drove the bus for the seniors and others as long as he was able.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an older brother at birth, a son-in-law, Bobby Keith Howell, and a foster sister, Mary Alice Hoyle.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, best friend, and companion of 72 years, Betty Sue Gibson Southern; his sons Timothy Lynn Southern (Evelyn) and Robert Gray Southern; a daughter, Donna Sue Howell; his grandchildren: David Southern (Amy), Augustine Thorpe (Mark), Michael Howell (Mary Beth), and Gina Wilcox (Dustin), his great-grandchildren: Joch (Lela), Breanna, Macie, and Matthew, and his great-great-grandchildren: Gloria, and Violet. Along with a brother, Roy Southern (Faye) and a multitude of other family.
The family will receive friends and loved ones in the sanctuary at First Baptist Church of King, on Kirby Rd., on Thursday, June 6, 2024, from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM. with services following at 6:00 PM with Pastor Caleb Waller officiating. Interment will immediately follow in King Memorial Park.
