John Stapleton Caldwell
December 27th, 1958 – February 22nd, 2025
66 Years Old
In a world full of middle children, John might have been the middlest. He was the 5th child out of 9 and grew up with two older sisters, Two older brothers, two younger sisters and two younger brothers. I know what you’re thinking – being the “middle” child is a state of mind, not always birth order. To that John would ask you to hold his beer… if he drank (he did not.)
Middle children generally feel neglected or invisible. Where some might over-compensate and seek attention, John likely saw opportunity. He lived his life on his own terms. He let others take the spotlight, while he spent his time and money amassing a vast collection of strange and unusual treasures. Christmas was especially exciting as you could always count on getting something from him that was unexpected and awesome!
John was crazy smart, but always happy to let others believe themselves to be the smartest in the room. He had strong opinions, but generally didn’t engage them in a way that could be received negatively. He was independent without being a loner, He loved sports without being obsessed, and seemed to like everyone he ever met. I’m guessing they all liked him too… How could they not?
Sure; it took us a while to get around to writing this obituary for John. As the middle child, I suspect he would have thought the delay was funny. I’m sure he’s laughing.
