John Thurston Vance, 68, of King, NC, slipped from this life into his eternal home on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston Salem, after enduring cancer with bravery.
John was born September 6, 1956, in Charleston, WV, to the late Charles L and Alice Mae Hunt Vance. During childhood, through his late teens, John was active in the Boy Scouts of America. After high school, John graduated from West Virginia University and pursued a career in management. He recently retired from Auto Zone after 31 years of dedicated service.
John was known for his heart of service in every area of his life. In his neighborhood, at his job and with his family and friends, he was always ready and willing to offer a helping hand. John was a friend to all and always intentional at making sure everyone felt included.
John loved spending time with family, helping others and riding his bicycle.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his first wife, Susan Vance-Johnson and his second wife, Linda Walker Vance.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Brenda Ramey Vance of the home; two sisters: Mary Simmons (Charles) of Midlothian, VA, and Elaine Landon of Dunbar, WV; a brother, Charles L. Vance, Jr. (Gayle) of Prince George, VA; two sons: John Thurston Vance, Jr. (Allie) of Galloway, OH, and David Welsch (Trish) of Heath, OH; a daughter, Megan Koch (John) of Columbus, OH; two stepsons: Elijah Boyles (Charity) of Pinnacle, NC and Hunter Boyles ( Megan) of Valdosta, GA; 15 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, June 30, 2025, at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Duane Corle officiating. The family will receive friends and loved ones from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will immediately follow at King Memorial Park.
