Joseph Charles “Joe” Perkins, 88, peacefully passed away at his cherished home in King, North Carolina, on September 2nd, 2024. Born on November 29th, 1935, Joe grew up in the close-knit community of Buladean, settled in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina.
Joe proudly and honorably served in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1958. After his service, he pursued a degree in pharmacy at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating in 1963. Joe then devoted himself to his community as co-founder of Stokes Pharmacy alongside his dear friend Omnie Grabs, where he worked with unwavering commitment and pride for thirty-eight years.
Joe's life was a blend of hard work, simple joys, and commitment to his family. His love for fishing and gardening reflected his deep connection to the land and the values of Buladean that he carried with him. Whether he was tending to his garden, mowing the lawn, or taking a leisurely walk on the beach, Joe approached life with a steady determination and a gentle spirit. His easygoing nature rarely wavered, except, perhaps, during a tense UNC basketball game when his passion for his team shone through.
In 1964, Joe married Erma Price from Johnson City, Tennessee, and together, they built a beautiful sixty-year journey filled with love and laughter. Joe was a devoted, loving father to Joey Perkins (Billie) of King and Gina Gordon (Corby) of Pinnacle and a doting “Papa Joe” to his three grandchildren: Jacob Gordon (Meghan and their daughter Alice), Taylor Perkins Rhodes (Taylor), and Lucas Gordon. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Veltie Fender.
Family and friends are invited to honor Joe’s memory and celebrate his life at Slate Funeral Home on East Dalton Road in King, North Carolina, on Wednesday, September 4th, 2024. Visitation will take place from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. A private graveside service will be held at a later time.
