King, NC – Julia Mae Cook Denny of King, NC, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at her home.
Mrs. Denny was born in Surry County, NC, on February 16, 1935, to the late Graham Thomas and Eunice Simmons Cook. She worked for Hanes Hosiery while lovingly raising 5 wonderful children, caring for her home, and being a devoted wife to her beloved husband, John Paul “J.P.” Denny, who preceded her in death. In her free time, she enjoyed word puzzles, knitting, and crocheting. She was known for being “matter-of-fact” and having a dry sense of humor. She was a faithful member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in King.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Terry Baker and Brian Hansel.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Denise Berry (Jim), LaRee Hansel, Mechelle Baker, Durwin Denny (Pamela), and Kurwin Denny (Michelle); 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and her sisters: Evaline Taylor and Christine Jessup.
The family will receive friends and loved ones on Monday, February 9, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Slate Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service beginning at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Art Wilt officiating.
