Mackie Reed Blackburn, born on November 19, 1940, passed away peacefully at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on January 8, 2025, surrounded by his children.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Mackie served his country with honor. He also enjoyed his years of service with the American Legion. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he was a devoted member and Deacon of Macedonia Baptist Church, where he found community and spiritual fulfillment. He was an avid deer hunter, and his many hobbies included fishing, weekly golf, and bowling with his friends.
He is survived by his children, a son, Barney Reed Blackburn (Marjorie) and a daughter, Sarah Blackburn Stanberry (Brian), four grandchildren, Justin Reed Blackburn, Ada Grace Blackburn, Ella Sue Blackburn, and Declan Reid Stanberry, his beloved sisters Normie Blackburn Jennings and Victoria Blackburn Robertson, and a brother-in-law Mike Anderson. He is predeceased by his parents, Henry Garfield Blackburn and Mabel Reed Blackburn, his wife, Marlene Vaughan Blackburn, sister Cynthia Blackburn Anderson, brothers-in-law Clyde Jennings and Arvil “Bud” Robertson, and a grandson, Henry James Blackburn.
The family will receive friends at Slate Funeral Home in King from 2 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 12, 2024. The funeral service will begin at 3 p.m., with Pastors Derrick Hinson and Paul Norman Officiating. Interment will follow at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery, 6816 Doral Drive, Tobaccoville, NC 27043.
Mackie's legacy as a veteran and a man of faith will be remembered by all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those who mourn his passing.
