Margaret Frances Hyman Johnston passed away of natural causes at the age of 97 on December 14, 2023. She was born November 2, 1926, to John Charles Hyman and Melissa Scott Phillips; preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, T. Allen Johnston, Jr., survived by three daughters: Melissa Hoople (Jim), Olivia Johnston (Peter Fenlon) and Marian Wilson (Jack) and two grandchildren Emily George (Michael) and Matthew Wilson.
Born in Richmond, VA, she was raised there as well as in her family’s ancestral home of Dalton, NC. She was graduated from Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC Greensboro) with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. In her married life, after moving around the United States with Allen’s job at ALCOA, they lived 30 years in Pittsburgh, PA then moved back to Dalton, NC. She and Allen moved to Salemtowne Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, NC twelve years ago.
Margaret was very active in Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Colonists, and Colonia Dames in both Pittsburgh and Winston-Salem. She loved world history, patriotism, and family history. In Pittsburgh, she sang in the choir at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church and was an active member of the Southern Club of Pittsburgh. In Winston-Salem she and Allen were active at Wake Forest Baptist Church and participated for years in Wake Forest’s Cardiac Rehabilitation program. Margaret was an accomplished seamstress, and loved art, crafting and tending the yard. She loved nature and always had leaves, seeds, and blossoms in her room.
A memorial service will be held at Salemtowne on January 27, 2024, at 1:00 p.m.
