Marjorie Van Meter Obituary

Mrs. Marjorie Marie Killebrew Van Meter died September 26, 2022, at Village Care of King.  She was born to William Jonas Killebrew Sr. and Emma Eliza Moore Killebrew on January 24, 1929, in Fountain, NC.

She was predeceased by her late husband Charles Leonard Van Meter Jr. in August of 2014 after 61 years of marriage. (May 23, 1953) In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Odell Gardner (Lovelace) and her brother, William Killebrew Jr. (Irma) and two nephews Robert Killebrew and “Buster” Gardner (Marie), her niece’s husband, Cliff Williams and Allen Corbett her great niece’s husband.

Survived by three sons and their wives: Charles Leonard Van Meter III (Anne Marshall), Allan Richard Van Meter (Laura Litchfield), Glenn Stuart Van Meter (Karen Vawter) and seven grandchildren: Nicholas, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Ashley Richard, Tyler (Merideth), Tori and Anyssa (Fischer) and two great grandsons Jacob and Camden Van Meter.

Other survivors include one niece Jewell Gardner Williams and one nephew Clyde Killebrew, two great nephews Robbie Killebrew and Johnny Gardner and three great nieces Cindy Williams Cobb (Tommy), Karen Williams Corbett and Tracey Durham, two great great nephews: T. C. Cobb (Katie) and Jordan Corbett (Amy), three great great nieces: Jamie Corbett, Layla Gardner and Kara Gardner,  two great great great nephews: Ryan Corbett and Adam Cobb and two great great great nieces: Emma Corbett and Macey Cobb.  Also surviving is one brother-in-law Thomas Van Meter (Barbara) and two nephews: Kenneth and Richard Van Meter.

She graduated from Farmville High School in 1947.  After graduating from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in Wilson, NC, in 1951 she moved to Winston-Salem and worked one year at Western Electric before teaching in Forsyth County for 3 ½ years.  After raising three sons she returned to teaching in 1973 in Stokes County for 17 wonderful years before retiring in 1990.

There will be a graveside service on Saturday Oct. 1 at 11:00 AM, at Trinity United Methodist Church in King.  The service will move inside if it is raining.
