KING – Mrs. Phoebe Sheppard Covington of King, N.C. died January 2, 2023. She was 85 years of age. Phoebe was a loving wife, mother, grandmother (mema), and friend. She was born on January 4, 1937 to her parents Marion and Inez Sheppard of Westfield who predeceased her. She is also predeceased by her husband William H. “Bud” Covington, and her sister Patsy Rogers. Phoebe is survived by daughter Sharon Butler and husband Jeff Butler, daughter Lori Corder and husband Dan Corder, brother Mike Sheppard, grandson Jason Butler and wife Lauren Butler, and great grandchildren Jenson and Jennings Butler.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening January 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Slate Funeral home in King, N.C. Funeral Services will be held graveside on Friday, January 6, at 11 a.m. at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall, N.C. Minister Ralph Sproles and Pastor Emily Larson will conduct the service.
Phoebe was a member of St Andrews Presbyterian Church in Stanleyville for 63 years and sang in the church choir. She was a graduate of Francisco High School where she was a member of the basketball team. She retired from Hanes/Sara Lee, where she worked for 43 years. Phoebe’s greatest love was her family, and she enjoyed every minute of the time she had to spend with them. She loved shopping, vacations, eating out, planting flowers around her home, collecting vintage dolls and glassware, and watching her “stories” on TV. She believed in honesty and integrity and lived her life honorably and as an example for others.
