Piney M. (Boyles) Slate

Winston-Salem – Piney Boyles Slate, 97, formerly of King, NC, passed away Monday, May 24, 2021.  She was a resident of Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community in Winston-Salem. 

She was born on August 25, 1923, in Stokes County to the late Johnny and Lula Darnell Boyles.  She was retired from Stokes Reynolds Hospital in Stokes County.  She attended King Community Church.

Piney loved her family, home, and church.  She loved to garden and was a wonderful cook.  Her homemade pickles and cornbread could win a blue ribbon!  She had a shy smile and dry wit.  For years she and husband Johnny would visit residents in local nursing homes to lead in prayer and song and serve ice cream.  She loved her community. 

Piney is preceded in death by her parents; her husband John Simpson Slate; her sister Zella Boyles; her brother, Posey G. Boyles and wife Ercelle; her daughters in law: Carolyn Slate, and Rosemary Slate; and a grandson, Kevin Slate.

Left to cherish her memory is her nephew, Ken Boyles and wife Jeannie, along with their children: Ryan Boyles and wife Kim, Jennifer Love and husband Matt; Benjamin Boyles; and four grandchildren. Also surviving is a niece, Peggy Jessup and husband Don with their children: Donnie Jessup and wife Nesta, Nichole Jessup and husband James, and Richard Jessup, along with three grandchildren. She also leaves behind a two stepson: John Slate and children: Keith Slate and wife Sherry, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; and Bobby Slate, and wife Cathy Anderson and their children: Ashli Nicks and husband Gregg, Brooke Bliss and husband Troy, Morgan Slate and Griff Martin and five grandchildren. 

Ms. Slate will lie in state on Friday, May 28, 2021 from 11:30 AM until 6:00 PM at Slate Funeral Home in King, NC. 

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 29, 2021 at Capella Church of Christ in King, NC with Mr. Mike Duggins officiating. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Capella Church of Christ Cemetery Fund: 1187 Flat Shoals Rd. King, NC 27021 or King Community Church: 849 Meadowbrook Dr. King, NC 27021.

The family would like to thank all of the caregivers of Arbor Acres for their kindness and care given to Piney during her time there.
