Steve Spainhour Obituary

Steve Voss Spainhour, 77, of Tobaccoville, died unexpectedly on December 16, 2025, at NS-ICU Forsyth Hospital. Steve was born June 11, 1948, in Tobaccoville, NC, to RJ and Grace Spainhour. He was the youngest of eight children.

Steve is survived by his wife, of 54 years, Marjorie Field Spainhour. Steve grew up on his family’s farm where they grew tobacco as well as the food that they ate and chickens, pigs, and a cow for milk. The children learned how to work hard and learned the important lessons of life that brought them up to be contributing adults. Steve, as the youngest of the children, got away with a lighter load since most of the earlier years of growing their farm had been carried out by his older siblings, especially his older sisters. Plus, his mom had a stroke shortly after his birth, and he spent some of his younger years helping her closer to the house rather than out in the field.

Steve was predeceased by two sons, Aaron and Jeffrey. He is survived by his granddaughter, Emily (Cory) Craddock, his great-granddaughters, Adalynn and Brooklynn, and his grandson, Jeremy.  He is survived by two brothers, Jerry and Paul Wayne, and his son Preston (Cheryl). Siblings that predeceased him, Juanita, Clara, Buster, Harry, Kelly, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Steve worked hard his whole life, first working in tobacco on the family farm as well as helping any neighbors or other family members who needed help working with their tobacco, suckering, or priming. He later worked several jobs in the Winston-Salem area until 1966, when he moved to Massachusetts. He worked at LG Balfour Jewelry Co., where he met his wife, Margie. In 1969, he was drafted into the Army; basic training at Fort Bragg, AIT at Fort Gordon, and then to Vietnam, where he served in the Signal Corps in Radio Relay.  He returned from Vietnam in 1970; Steve and Margie were married in 1971. When Aaron and Jeffrey were very young, the family moved to North Carolina and built a house on family land given to them by Steve’s father.

Steve worked at Westinghouse TCP for 25 years, at B&D Trucking for 10 years, and then at NC DOT for 10 years. At Westinghouse, Steve worked every hour he could work to support his young family. Following retirement after a lifetime of work, he and Margie loved their time at home, gardening, mowing, and working with his tractor. Steve especially loved sitting in his rocking chair on the front porch, watching the world go by. Steve was a fine man and was well-loved.
