Terry Richard Hutchins

Terry Richard Hutchins Sr., 88, of Laurinburg, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on March 4, 2026.

Terry was born in King, NC, to Harry Spencer and Lida Phillips Hutchins. He was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Wake Forest School of Law. Terry was a proud 49-year Master Mason and member of Pilot Lodge #493, and a member of the Scottish Rite. He retired from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where he was the campus attorney and taught business law. Terry also had a private law practice, but his joy came from collecting John Blue tractors, antique cars, and supporting the Stewartsville Volunteer Fire Department. He loved visiting with family and friends and sharing stories about his life adventures.

In addition to his parents and brother, Thomas Lyn (Tommy) Hutchins, Terry was preceded in death by his son, Terry Richard Hutchins, Jr., stepson, Daniel Kovatch, and great-grandson, Alec Shaw.

Terry is survived by his loving wife, Mona Hutchins of McColl, SC: five daughters: Kim Martin (Skip) of Simpsonville, SC, Sherry Turner of Dobson, NC, Amber Hutchins (Jamie Gibson) of Laurinburg, NC, Kristy Stone (Tim) of Pittsburgh, PA, Stephanie Jenkins (Tony) of Ellerbe, NC and a stepson, Don Kovatch (Ahna) of Allentown, PA. He also leaves behind adoring grandchildren: Brandy Butcher (Dan), Danielle Shaw (Ian), Terry Richard (Trey) Hutchins III, Kyle Smith (Nikki), Walt Miller, Spencer Miller (Jaclyn), Parker Miller (Breanna), Matthew Chavis (Ashley), Reid Chavis (Leanne), Ryan Norton (Liz), Kevin Norton (Becca), Miranda Kovatch and Lucie Kovatch and an abundance of great grandchildren, family and friends.

The family would like to acknowledge the loving care and support provided by Vickie McPherson and Brenda Washington.

Visitation will be held at Richard Boles Funeral Service in Laurinburg, NC, beginning at 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2026.   

Services will be held in King, NC, at Slate Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 10th, beginning with visitation from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m., followed by a graveside service with Masonic Rights at 3:00 p.m. in King Memorial Park, King, NC.

The family kindly requests that donations in Terry’s memory be made to the Stewartsville Fire Department in Laurinburg, NC.
