King - Terry James Slate, 65, of King, NC passed away at his home, surrounded by his family, on August 9, 2022. He had been under the care of Mountain Valley Hospice since December 2020 as his health declined.
Terry, affectionately known as “Julio”, led a life full of fun, excitement, passion, love, and friendship. A man of many hobbies and interests, Terry gathered a huge circle of good friends over a lifetime of riding motorcycles, drag racing, playing golf, restoring cars, hanging out at Little Italy, and relaxing at Belews Lake. This capacity for close and enduring friendships was evident during his final days when countless people visited him to tell stories, laugh and cry, and to see Terry’s famous and winning smile. Having traveled the country and many Caribbean islands, including an adventurous six week long coast-to-coast motorcycle trip, Terry’s charm won him friends and acquaintances all over, from Aruba and Key West to Seattle WA, and everywhere in between. As a devoted husband, loving father, brother, and son, and most recently, a proud and doting grandfather, Terry’s family was the light of his life.
Terry’s likeable personality and thorough knowledge of cars and engines also served him well in his professional life. As co-owner of Napa Auto Parts in Old Town, he used his well known ability to manage and delegate to build a very successful business. A social hub as well as a busy shop, people came daily to the auto parts store to shoot the breeze, tell stories, and build lasting friendships.
Terry was preceded in death by his father, James “Jimmy” Norman Slate, Jr., step-sister Donna C. Wilson, and step-brother Tommie R. Clifton.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Vicky Linville Slate; daughter and daddy’s girl Candice S. Covington and husband Christian; and adored granddaughter Louisa Covington, the love of his life. Also cherishing his memory are his mother, Carolyn H. Sechriest; step-mother Ann J. Slate; brother Kent “Kenny” Slate (Christina); and sister Sherry S. Southern (Tim).
The family would like to express special thanks to Mountain Valley Hospice and to Sylvia Allen, who provided much needed support and loving care during Terry’s illness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
Family will receive friends and relatives from 6-8pm on Saturday August 13th, 2022 at Slate Funeral Home. A graveside memorial service will be held at 4pm on Sunday August 14th, 2022 at Mountain View Baptist Church in King, NC.
