William Gray Smith, 88, of King, NC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Village Care of King.
Gray was born on June 19, 1937, in Stokes County, NC, to the late Will Andrew and Mattie Jane Moss Smith. He was a truck driver with Bimco Plumbing Supplies for 45 faithful years. Gray loved as Christ loved and walked as Christ walked, God, Family and Country were most important to him. He cherished his family and found great joy in spending as much time as he could with them. He was a founding member of Kingway Chapel and was an avid motorcycle rider. He leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mary Ruth Smith, and his siblings: Drudy, Jonah, Elmer, Owen, Thelma, Marjorie, Stella, Wallace and Gerald.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Teresa McHone (Donnie), and Aleta Lilly (Bryan), his sister, Mary Alderman, his grandchildren: Joshua McHone, Joseph McHone (Hope), Jeremy McHone (Suzanna), Hannah Harvey (Russell), Brandon Lilly, Noah Lilly, and Sebastian Lilly, his great grandchildren: Kadence, Adaley, Wesley, Lynley, Thora, and Oliver, his dear friend, J.L. Tucker, and his sisters-in-law: Bonnie Smith and Barbara Smith.
The family will receive friends and loved ones on Friday, May 15, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Slate Funeral Home in King; and at other times, at the home of his daughter Teresa, 1398 Coon Rd. Pinnacle, NC.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Slate Funeral Home with Pastor Eddie Sawyers, and Pastor Mark Simmons officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Volunteer Primitive Baptist church cemetery.
